Most rack systems are designed to mount a roof tent if you are installing in the back of your truck.

Roof tents are designed for most vehicles with roof racks. A general rule of thumb is to ensure that your rack has a dynamic weight capacity of at least the weight of the tent. This is the weight that the rack can physically carry when the vehicle is in motion.

With a tent, the weight of the tent plus the weight of the passengers is effectively spread across the entire frame as well as the tent hinges and ladders, also known as the static load-bearing capacity. This is theoretically much greater, as the vehicle's frame needs to be strong enough to protect passengers in the event of an accident or rollover.

Typically, our roof tents weigh between 130 pounds and 190 pounds, so your decision on which model to choose will depend on how much weight your roof rack can carry.

Your crossbars should be at least 20 inches apart, with a maximum distance of 60 inches.

Because zippers are subject to various elements (sand, mud, rain, snow), they need to be maintained to maintain a long life. It is hard to keep zippers away from mud and dirt, so the best thing to do is to add some lubricant. Using a lubricant such as beeswax is a great way to protect the life of your zipper. Simply buy a small piece and rub it on the zipper as you open and close it. This should greatly improve the operation of the zipper and dramatically increase its life span. If dirt and grime does get into the zipper, clean it with a damp cloth and re-lubricate it.

As the sun starts to set, the wind starts to kick up. The wind doesn't feel very strong, but it can be unpredictable. Since we manufacture our tents in-house, we ensure each one meets our 4-season standards. Every roof top tent we make is tested in winds up to 35MPH, so you can be confident that it will offer you comfortable protection from the elements. We've even heard of customers camping in wind gusts up to 60MPH!

Follow these steps to reinforce your setup and ensure your RTT weathers the storm. 

1. After arriving at your campsite, park your vehicle so the hard shell of your RTT will be positioned into the wind to deflect any gusts.

2. Deploy your tent and find the ladder hinges. They are located on the top rung of the ladder where it attaches to the tent.

There are several recommended ways to store your tent, but first be sure the tent is dried out. If you have to close your tent wet when you leave camp, always open it up and dry it out immediately upon returning home.  Mold and mildew can form if left for too many days. 

When removing your tent always get another person to assist you.  This will help prevent you from injury and possibly damaging your vehicle.  If you have to remove the tent yourself, a hoist system of some sort is recommended. 

If you have to take the tent off and store it in your garage, make sure you never set the tent down on the cement which could damage the exterior cover.  Always use a foam pad to set the tent on, and it's okay to set most models on their side. 

One thing people don’t think of, is wrapping the tent up in a tarp to prevent rodents from damaging the fabric.  The best recommendation is to wrap the tent in stretch wrap to protect the fabric from moisture, dust, and critters.

Depending on the height of your roof top tent and the weight of your dog (or your strength), lifting them up may be the best solution. One of our older dogs wears a vest with a carry handle. This makes it much easier to take them in and out of the tent.
